Psalm 29 (NIV)
What does this say about God?
A psalm of David.
Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord strikes
with flashes of lightning.
The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord is enthroned as King forever.
The Lord gives strength to his people;
the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Psalm 29… What does this say about God? God is glorious and strong, but these are embedded in his holiness. What would happen if I was really confronted holiness? God’s voice (his thoughts made known) are powerful and majestic. It strikes. It breaks. It flashes. It shakes. It twists. It strips. God’s powerful holiness places him in peace. That peace is passed to his people. What does this say about me? The elements, nature, allow me to see aspects of God’s character. Will I praise him before the storm, not just in the storm or in the calm/peace after the storm? The sign of peace after the flood (see Gen 9) was the bow – the bow bent toward heaven, not toward me. So much here!
WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT GOD?
God is a speaking God – a God of words. His words are more powerful than anything else.
WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT ME?
God still speaks today. He has given us his word in the Bible and his Son and his voice is still brought by his Spirit. Notice the progression in the psalm. 1. Glory is ascribed 2. God’s voice comes 3. The Lord is enthroned. While in this case it is angels ascribing I think the principle applies to us. In worship, praise, and prayer we ascribe glory to God. God’s presence and voice comes and brings illumination of his word. We respond to that voice and as a result God is enthroned in our lives.
The application may be a bit of a stretch but I think it works
God: power in every realm– the heavens, waters, forests, desert, floods. My dad said when God made the oak, He really went all out to make it strong. You must pre-drill and use soap or wax on the screw if you plan to use a screw. It’s easy to break off a screw as you twist it! The voice of The Lord can destroy an oak!
Me: I have no strength but what He gives. And amid all the fury and power of God, and in the face of roaring waters and twisted trees, He gives — not terror, but PEACE!
I had made a comment on this yesterday before work in the morning and …it did not take but was so ministered by this …need to take a moment & share…
What this passage speaks to me about God .. Ascribe to the Lord Glory due His Name … I took time this week to walk in the woods …as I spent time slowing down in the sweet smell of the woods after the rain…maybe alittle during it worship was natural overflowing glorying in all His hand had made …the river was swelled with power and movement …the Lord thunders over the waters …the voice …the word that brought this all into existence …yet He whispers my name …. He the God of such power and wonder …calls me and waits for my response …He allows me to turn away…and I’m humbled by such a all powerful God who could demand …yet allows me @this time the choice to worship ..He draws me into it …He provokes me ever so tenderly at so many turns …What does this say about or to me …in the darkness and the storms … In the times when things are unclear …the choice to worship …is the one Free will gift / offering I can give ..in faith when I can not see …and much like the rain & storm that brought such a sweetness a fragrance the woods tends to have @ such times… My choice to worship is that to Him …knowing He promises to give strength to His people …in those moments in the wood this week …as all these things happened ..my heart gain courage in the place that I was in …and Peace flowed freely …
That’s encouraging to read Lisa.
